The five best mountain passes to ride a road bike in Valencia

29 June, 2016 by Eva No Comment

Valencia is not Pyrenees or Alps, we know that. But it is not only beaches and Coast plain. The province of Valencia, as the rest of the region, has a very hilly interior confluence of the Iberian Cordillera from North to South, and the last foothills of the Betica from West to East. This mountainous interior boasts deep, steep valleys, formed by the main rivers that cross it. A few kilometers from the city of Valencia we find mountains exceeding 1,000 metres above sea level.

If we want to train mountain passes near the city, this is our selection of the top five:

Puerto del Oronet

Located in the heart of the Sierra Calderona, is a classic within the Valencian cycling. The ascent begins in the town of Serra and has a length of 5 km. We can complete the port taking the detour direction to the viewpoint of the Garbi, with this we will get some extra km of ascent and we could enjoy a fantastic view of the entire Bay of Valencia, Castellon and the impressive Sierra de Espadán.

La Frontera

This port is located, as the previous one, in the heart of Sierra Calderona, but on this occasion the ascent is via the north face of the sierra. We start the port from the population of Estivella. It is a mountain pass with hard ramps in which we will not find breaks where you can catch air. The rise is really demanding and will test our capacity for suffering. Recommended for trained bikers or bikes with an appropriate cadence. The views are fantastic as we go up.

Alcublas

We can access from the town of Casinos or from the city of Valencia, through the roads of orange trees that will bring us to the base of this beautiful harbor. They are the first really high mountains Northwest from the city. We start the mountain pass at a roundabout. The first ramps are the toughest, to then ascend in a more smooth and steady way. The roads are really good and the views of the entire Gulf of Valencia are incredible. On days with good visibility we can get to see the peak of Montgó in Denia (Alicante).

Dos Aguas

From the town of Llombay, we take the road towards the city of Dos Aguas. We run on a road with a perfect pavement that will take us to enjoy the feeling of speed and smoothnessTwo mountain passes are actually crowned, as there is just a few minutes between them that will give us air to deal with the second part of the pass. Since we crown the pass, we can enjoy the views of Dos Aguas at the bottom of the Valley. The descent is incredibly fast, fun, extreme sensations for a pass close to Valencia.

Barx y Barxeta

They really are two passes that are connected to the rear of the famous Monduver peak, located in Gandia. Both options start at Simat de Valldigna, and in this case my choice is to climb by Barxeta pass to bind to the ascent that leads to Barx. An asphalt in good condition and good views of la Safor, let you enjoy this Ascension. It is not a hard pass, it is very quiet and suitable for training in the winter months. The second part, direction Barx from Pla del Corral is very beautiful. We will run between lush Mediterranean forest, you may be surprised at the beauty of the surroundings, you‘ll be cycling in a unique and fantastic environment! A port is very frequented by cyclists of the region and of various nationalities.
